type, write
Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008yee - school’s back in session and as usual life is too busy for words. i’m in the middle of apartment hunting in upper upper manhattan and while it’s been “fun” (in the excess stomach acid producing kinda way) seeing apartments and packing and budget futzing, i’m so ready to be done with it and settle in somewhere.
last night was the first night of class and it was good to walk into the lab for my typography class and see familiar faces. i still am not feeling a strong commaraderie at my program, but considering that it’s majority part time night classes and it’s only my second term, that’s to be expected. the most refreshing thing about tuesday nights type class? instead of jumping onto the shiny new mac’s in the lab our professor had us push back the keyboards and mice and pull out pencil and paper to draw. we spent about half an hour drawing the classic coca cola logo from memory and then trying to mimic the logo using a hand-drawn grid. though everyone was silent, i could feel other folks internally groaning about having to draw in class, but i loved it. this will be my fourth type class in 2 years and it’s the very first one where i’ve had to use my hands to draw and not to key-stroke. hopefully the pace will pick up and we’ll get to discussions and slides and critiques, but i’m really glad we started out so… analog.
