i love books books books…
was driving to gps’ last night and listening to jay-z’s ‘girls, girls, girls’ which i used to love as a, what 18 year old? depending on my mood though, now-a-days i’m too much of a ‘grown-up’ to listen to lines like “but when I met your ass you was dead broke and naked” and not cringe. i mean, he actually uses the word ’sqauw’ to describe an indian woman… i was in a quirky mood so i rolled my eyes but kept singing along. i’m usually not the type to take offense easily - unless somethings thrown specifically at me, i usually brush that stuff off. i lived through the whole haiti / aids things in the mid-late 80’s so i think my skin’s thicker than most.
anyway! remnants of ‘girls girls girls’ was still in my head this morning as i remembered that this weekend the nyc independent publishers1‘ fair is going on. and i love books books books books! really excited to go to the nyc independent publishers fair tomorrow and hear katha politt read from a new memoir. then there’s also a workshop on publishing erotica - not that i’ve got aspirations there, but let’s just say i’m looking forward to ‘listening in’. not to mention all of the delicious books that will be on sale!
and next week my school is having it’s annual literary evening. this years theme is Kinfolk and Other Strangers,” featuring authors like Bliss Broyard2 and Porochista Khakpour who’s books i was checking out. i love the poster one the parents designed for the evening…

then a few weeks ago the aiga had their 50 books/ 50 covers3 show on their broadway gallery. some favorites of mine were the new covers of ‘brave new world’ , ‘what is the what’ , and ofcourse the new mcsweeney’s annual… not surprising all of which were very graphic and limited colors. the best part for me, though, was that gps actually sat and read me a bedtime story called oh, no! not ghosts!…

I was just listening to that song today too, for the first time in months. Weird.
