the new domestics
March 15th, 2008the big happy news is that gps and i are officially domestic partners! we went to city hall last wednesday and stood in the same line as the folks in jeans and tees and kilts and red silk who were all waiting to get married, but we walked out with a different kind of certificate. we’ve been going through the circuit of telling friends and family and having to say the same thing over and over again: it’s not like we’re married but it’s a way bigger thing than just ‘living together’. in nyc, being domestic partners doesn’t mean a whole heck of a lot (which sucks for the folks who don’t have the option to get married, separate but equal my arse) except for the fact that the city recognizes us as a couple. how quaint! i wonder if the city gov’t is going to send us a gift basket? anyway! gps and i are going to celebrate with our families, and we’ll get rings and in the meantime we’ll keep acting like a ‘regular couple’ except we get to greet each other with a ‘howdy, partner!’ and a high five every once in a while. and you know that suits me just fine!
